On Thursday, Oct 24, Lucia M. Welwolie, a Grade 12 student, officially launched the Liberian Girls in Orbit (LiGo) Foundation, creating a Future Where Girls Lead in Science and Space Exploration. This launch marks the beginning of an exciting journey as the LiGo Foundation aims to unlock the potential of young Liberian girls, inspiring them to explore, innovate, and lead in the fields of STEM and aerospace.

During the event, Lucia announced the upcoming Satellite Design Challenge and ISS Experiment Proposal Competition, emphasizing the role of aerospace technology in environmental monitoring, agriculture, and climate change solutions.

Keynote speakers included Hon. Patrick Honnah, Commissioner of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), and Hon. Emmanuel Taplah, Port Manager at James Spriggs Payne Airport. They spoke about:

• Bridging the gender gap in STEM fields.
• The intersection of e-agriculture, internet, and sustainability.
• The impact of aerospace initiatives in Liberia.
• The role of mentorship in empowering young girls interested in STEM.

Hey Everyone 👋 It’s the Liberian High School Girl

Hey Everyone 👋
It’s the Liberian High School Girls Satellite Competition Sponsored by LiGO (Liberian Girls in Orbit) to be held on August 17, 2024, at the Innovation Preparatory International Academy - IPREP campus, 24th street Sinkor, Monrovia.
The founder & CEO of LiGO, Lucia, a 12th grader at #IPREPLIB explains:
“This competition aims to spark interest and propel Liberian high school girls towards careers in aerospace engineering by challenging them to design a miniature satellite or propose an experiment suitable for the International Space Station (ISS). There are two categories of this competition: LiGo Sat and LiGo Sci.

Ligo sat: Design and build a functional prototype of a miniature satellite with a specific mission relevant to Liberia.
Ligo Sci: Propose an experiment that can be conducted on the ISS that benefits Liberia. Make a detailed research and propose an experiment that can later be conducted for the benefit of Liberia.
LiGO can be a groundbreaking initiative in Liberia. It will not only introduce girls to the exciting world of aerospace engineering but also create a network of young female scientists and engineers who can be the future leaders in Liberia’s space exploration journey.”
Let’s come out to support our girls come August 17, 2024. #LiberianGirlsinOrbit #Liberia #Satelite #Competition #LigoSatLiberia
